Olympics 2021. After the postponement by the IOC and the Japanese authorities because of the coronavirus, the Olympic Games in Tokyo, scheduled for 2021, must finally take place in July and August, even if many voices in Japan claim the cancellation. Dates, sports on the program, TV broadcast…
Here’s what you need to know.
After the official postponement of the Tokyo Olympics due to the coronavirus pandemic by the IOC, the president of the Japanese organizing committee Yoshiro Mori unveiled, in March 2020, the news dates of the planetary sporting event. The latter are much like the initial dates since instead of being disputed from July 24 to August 9, 2020, the Olympics will take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021. The organizers had expressed their desire to organize the Games by summer 2021 at the latest despite some rumors of organization in the spring. The Paralympics will also take place from August 24 to September 5. If the postponement of the Olympic Games is simply historic, the already qualified athletes did not need to take part in a new qualifying exercise as Thomas Bach, President of the IOC, indicated in a statement: “It goes without saying that the athletes who qualified for Tokyo 2020 remain qualified. This follows from the fact that these Games, in agreement with Japan, remain the Games of the XXXII Olympiad “.
The Japanese government nevertheless decided last March not to allow the presence of spectators from foreign countries during the Tokyo Olympic Games, in order to limit the spread of Covid-19. Japanese organizers said tickets purchased by those affected will be refunded. A measure that does not convince Japanese public opinion, the majority (80% of respondents) opposed the holding of the Olympics in Tokyo, fearing the spread of the virus. Last May, the prestigious Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, official partner of these Games, had also asked for the outright cancellation of this 2021 edition, stating in particular: “We ask Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to calmly assess and objectively the situation and decide on the cancellation of the event this summer. We are now far from a situation in which everyone can be assured of being safe “.
These Summer Olympics must begin with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, July 23, 2021, and end on Sunday, August 8 with the Closing Ceremony. The Tokyo 2020 organizing committee specified last year that matches in the preliminary rounds of football and softball competitions were to be played the day before the opening ceremony, while preliminary rowing and shooting events were to be played. The arch would take place on the same day as the opening ceremony, July 24. The new program is not yet complete but several adjustments will be made compared to the initial version.
Six new disciplines are due to enter the Olympic program in 2021. They are karate, surfing, climbing, skateboarding and baseball-softball. In total, 33 sports will be represented in these Summer Olympics. Here is the list of disciplines identified by the organizers:
